National Adoption Service for Wales series shortlisted for the Parenting Award
A Bengo Media-produced series has received a nomination in the prestigious 2023 British Podcast Awards.
Truth Be Told: Adoption Stories is a podcast made for the National Adoption Service for Wales, in collaboration with the public relations agency, Cowshed. It’s one of six podcasts nominated for the Parenting Award at this year’s ceremony.
Across six episodes, Truth Be Told: Adoption Stories hears from adoptive parents and young people across Wales. Bengo Media and Cowshed also produce a Welsh language sister series for the National Adoptive Service, called Dweud y Gwir yn Blaen: Straeon Mabwysiadu.
The first five episodes were recorded in the autumn of 2022. Bengo Media worked with Cowshed’s initial brief and casting. We then wrote questions for five hour-long recording sessions with adoptive parents. The best bits of these recordings were then shaped into fortnightly-released episodes, narrated by Corienne Strange, the National Adoption Service’s Head of Policy.
The sixth and final episode of the series was a first of its kind – a podcast produced and presented by adopted young people aged between 13 and 25. Presented by Ruth Letten from Connected, Adoption UK’s Children and Young People Service, The Takeover challenged misconceptions and prejudices faced by adopted children.
This nominated series comes two years after the original six episodes. Series two was filmed and released on YouTube as a collection of ten-minute highlight videos. We also released a series of one-minute social media films.
The British Podcast Awards has been the industry’s marquee event since its foundation in 2017. Truth Be Told is nominated alongside some of the biggest podcasts in the UK including The News Agents, Off The Menu and Dan Snow’s History Hit.
Other nominees in this year’s Parenting category are Dad Still Standing, Dadvengers, Dirty Mother Pukka, My First Five Years, and The SENDcast. The awards will be held in London on September 28th.
